Supervisor Certificate Information
Saturday, 15 November 2008
Dear Non-Teaching Professionals:

Thank you all for your interest in the new requirements for the administrative Supervisor Certificate. Whereas the previous requirements included 3 years classroom teaching experience and a concurrently held teaching certificate, our certificates and experience in schools will now count toward meeting the requirements to hold an administrative Supervisor level certificate. The three professions currently affected by these changes include School Psychologists, School Counselors and Speech-Language Professionals. There are other requirements, which you can access from the attached documents. It is now possible for all of us to consider leadership positions in our respective fields. Having appropriate administrators will not only benefit us but will also benefit the children who receive our learning support services. Please consider taking advantage of these new opportunities.

Completing Assistive Technology Evaluations in the School Setting: Best Practice

Assistive Technology is a mandate, not a choice!
Did you know it is a federal mandate that assistive technology be considered for every special education student? Do you know what technology is available and how it fits into our roles as therapists supporting the education process?  At this workshop, participants will learn about the technology that is available in a hands-on, interactive style. Participants will be given the tools to take that knowledge and apply it to the public school setting in order to provide best practice services to the students you serve.  While a large range of technology will be covered, the topics of Augmentative and Alternative Communication, Technology for Reading, and Technology for Writing will be the main focus areas.

Evidence-Based Practice
Saturday, 20 September 2008
Ralph L. Shelton, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus, University of Arizona

Marjorie Rees, Speech-Language Pathologist, Sunnyside Unified School District

Maria Call, M.S., Speech-Language Pathologist, Tucson Unified School District

J. M. Barry (2004 page 6) wrote:  “Medicine is not yet and may never be fully a science–the idiosyncrasies, physical and otherwise, of individual patients and doctors may prevent that–but, up to a few decades before World War I, the practice of medicine had remained quite literally almost unchanged from the time of Hippocrates more than two thousand years earlier.  Then, in Europe first, medical science changed and, finally, the practice of medicine changed.”

Introduction.
In this article, we review and discuss information about evidence-based practice (EBP), the nature of evidence, the replication and integration of clinically pertinent research literature, the use of evidence-based practice in speech-language pathology, the role of teamwork in EBP, and criticisms of EBP.  Culture, oral motor exercises, and witchery are considered. We use “client” rather than “patient” except when citing or discussing a publication.

Silent Auction
Wednesday, 30 July 2008
The ArSHA Public Relations Committee will soon be soliciting donations from individuals and businesses for its Silent Auction, which will be held at the 49th Annual Convention in the Phoenix area this spring, 2009.

We will be using the money gained from the auction to help fund our legislative efforts for 2009.  Some events that the fund is supporting right now include licensure for Speech-Language Pathology Assistants, certification changes, and the ArSHA-ASHA Focused Initiative on Personnel Issues.  ArSHA will recognize all donors in its convention program and on the website.

Please consider volunteering a few hours of your time to help solicit donations of gift cards, services, or items from individuals and businesses for this very worthwhile activity and/or to help monitor the actual Silent Auction at convention time.  Think about it; contact me for further information at labrozzik@cox.net.

Thank you,
Karen LaBrozzi,
ArSHA Public Relations Chair
